SORM excerpt

The heavy beat of the music filled the Urban Wolf Club. The place was packed to overflowing. Liam had sought the privacy of his office just to get away from everything and everyone, even if that meant rustling through the papers on his desk trying to decide what bills to pay first. The check book was open, and he’d already paid ten bills. “Damn I hate doing this shit. It’s hard to think with all this noise.”

At times it could be difficult running two different clubs. Tonight both were packed. It was talent night, the night for local performers to show off their best. They came from all around to sing, dance, and play various instruments for the chance to win a big prize, to be on stage and be heard. Some had real potential, and on a few occasions talent scouts had come to his club to hear the performances. So, tonight was the busiest night of the season in both clubs and to make things worse, the moon was full.

Upstairs he catered to the local humans while downstairs he hosted the more special clientele. Both groups had their issues at times, especially when the supernaturals mixed with the human customers. And, he had a feeling, it was going to be a particularly challenging evening. A large group of Sensual Witches was visiting on their way to the new Lustulian temple to serve as priestesses. For the moment, the lusty women and the local pack of werewolves were downstairs enjoying some carnal delights.

Even in his back office, the sound was overpowering. “I just need to give it up.” Liam put his head in his hands. “But I gotta get these paid tonight.” He slammed open his ledgers, then turned on the computer. He could smell the varied scents of all of the people in his territory. The human patrons paid the bills and kept his cash flow where he liked it. But their emotions were powerful and he could sense them, especially the more nefarious ones. Sometimes they threw him into overdrive. He was a predator and some of them were no more worthy than prey.

Damn, I need a vacation. He snarled. I’ve gotta get away from everything.

After writing two more checks, he stuffed them into envelopes. The annoying noise pounded in Liam’s aching head. “Fuck, I can’t think, there’s too much going on here tonight.” He threw down his pen, and it rolled off the other side of the desk. As he was about to get up to retrieve it, there was a knock at his door. “What?” His jaw tightened with irritation.

“There’s a delivery for the kitchen.” Tobias opened the door to stick his head in.

“Come in.” Liam waved.

“They need your signature. I’ve checked everything, it’s all here.” Tobias pushed the door open and walked to Liam’s desk.

“Kinda late for a delivery on a Friday night.”

Tobias stopped at the front edge of his desk. His hair was unfashionably long and shaggy. He handed Liam the bill of goods. Liam reviewed, signed it, and then handed it back to him.

“It’s only 6:30.” Tobias shrugged. “It’s not really all that late.”

“Oh, guess not.”

“But why are you working on a Friday night? You’re the boss.”

“It’s gotta get done.” Liam frowned. “I’ve got nothing better to do, and I just don’t want to deal with the crowds tonight.”

“Can I bring you anything? You should really cut lose. Enjoy the night.”

Liam barely heard Tobias, his mind deep in thought as he looked over the next bill to be paid. “Hey, you listening?”

“What?” Liam looked up. “You still here?”

“Yeah. Did you hear me?” Tobias frowned.

“I guess not.” He looked back down at his ledger.

“I asked if you’d like me to bring you something.”

“Nah, I’m fine. I have some whiskey.”

“Okay. Call if you need anything.” Tobias closed the door as he left.

Rand stared at Caroline, taking in what she had just told him. "You lied to me," he retorted sharply. "First you told me that you didn't have a conversation with him, now you're telling me that you did. Your story is starting to fall apart. You need to tell me the whole truth. Was this man stalking you? Did he bother you in any way? Why did you go to his apartment and threaten him and then kill him?" Rand asked, his voice rose in anger.

"You've got to believe me! I did not go to this man's apartment!" Caroline said, her voice getting louder.

"If the man stalked you, bothered you, or abused you in any way, we can help get your sentence reduced. It would go a long way in the courtroom if you confessed and came clean with this now," Rand said, his voice still raised.

"I have nothing to confess," Caroline replied forcefully.

"How the hell did his cellphone end up in your SUV?" Rand's anger burst at her.

Caroline recoiled at his temper. Then she snapped at him, her voice equally angry, "I don't know how it got there!"

"Well, you apparently had it in your SUV all along."

"I don't know how that cellphone got in my vehicle," Caroline stated emphatically, slamming both hands on the table.

"It would be in your best interest if you confess or fill in the gaps of your story. You will be going down for murder one and a very long prison sentence." Rand jerked forward in his chair and looked into her eyes. His eyes were dark and angry.

Keys to Her Heart by Lacey Wolfe

SOR Keys to Her Heart VBT BannerGenre: Contemporary Romance

Love happens when you least expect it.

Officer Cody Duncan gave up on love years ago. Or so he thought.  He was content with his quiet solitary life, until a clumsy waitress spilled hot coffee on his pants and turned his world upside down. Suddenly, there’s a new heat in his life, filled with cravings for things he once pushed aside.

Lily Jenkins’ busy life as a single mom and primary caretaker for her elderly mother leaves little time for herself. Struggling to adjust to a new life in a small town, her focus is too easily derailed by the gorgeous man she accidentally spilled hot coffee on. Knowing she has too much already going on, Lily vows to keep Cody at a distance, even though she craves him in ways she never thought possible.

Their attempts at simple friendship continually fail as they soon discover an untamable fire between them whenever they are alone together.

Seeing a life he never imagined for himself, will Cody have the patience to wait for the woman of his dreams? Will Lily finally let go and give Cody the Keys to Her Heart?
SORM excerpt

As they walked back up the main road in town, Cody couldn’t shake the feeling Lily was holding back on him. From the outside, she seemed to have her life together. She was strong and confident, but something told him there was a story she wasn’t sharing. He wouldn’t push. If, and when, she was ready, he’d listen. He didn’t plan on going anywhere.

God, was he already thinking about the long haul with her? He was in trouble, and he hadn’t even kissed her yet. He’d definitely thought about it, though.

“You’ve been such a gentleman showing me around.” She tugged at the hem of her dress. Her hot, sexy, want-to-rip-it-off-her dress.

“Who better than me?” he flirted.

“I can’t think of anyone.” She stared at him. Her long red curls begged him to touch them. Were they as soft as they looked?

“We should do this again.” His heart raced as he waited for her response.

“Yes.” She stepped back a little, increasing the space between them. “My evening schedule is kind of hectic. So daytime is best for me.”

“I understand. You have your son to care for.”

Her gaze darted away and she sucked in her bottom lip. “Yeah. Speaking of which, he’ll be home before long, and I should be there to get him off the bus.”

He hated that their time together was ending. “Okay. Let me walk you to your car.”

“You don’t have to.”

“I want to.”

She gave him the cute little grin he found himself adoring already. Of course, she’d parked near Luigi’s, which had them to her car too quickly.

Lily leaned against the side and he could practically see the wheels turning in her head. Was she debating the kiss as much as he was? Oh yeah, he wanted to explore those sweet lips of hers, but not yet. Not until he could spend a good few minutes with her.

Excerpt

Olivia reveled in the salty-sweet taste of his skin. She mewed against the hardness of his shoulder as his thumb plied her taut nipple through the lace of her bra. The longer his lips lingered over her shimmering skin, the more possessed with desire she became. The hell with Sullivan saying he was addicted to her. She was the junkie and she knew it. Her fingers tucked just inside the waistband of his boxers and she pushed them as far down his hips as she could manage. He took over from there, kicking them off.

“You make me crazy,” Sullivan murmured between delectable kisses and small, ravenous bites across her collarbone. “My God, I want you so bad.”

Only he was capable of inciting a full-on riot within her body. “You’re welcome,” Olivia rasped, feeling his hands move between their bodies.

He unbuttoned her jeans with one hand, slipping his fingers inside the front of her lace bikini panties. Olivia gasped, her stomach swirling around like fireflies on a moonlit night, and she bit at her bottom lip. He was barely touching her and she was vibrating beneath him.

Olivia squirmed under his hand, lightheaded and delirious. The heat was intense. “Gods…”

“I want you naked,” he demanded, and kissed her on the lips again.

He was gentle, every touch loving and deliberate. Her breath soon grew short and desperate, and she let loose a series of small, urgent gasps. She screamed against his shoulder, convulsing into a string of explosive spasms she couldn't prevent. His strong arms wrapped around her like a life preserver, holding her until she stopped trembling, and he kissed the top of her head.
“I love to watch you, Olivia,” he whispered. “It’s so beautiful.”

Abby Has Gone Wild by Fiona Murphy

Jack won’t give up on her and Abby has to decide if she’s willing to give up the safety of being alone to let Jack in.

SORM excerpt

“So why don’t you like cops again?”

“Before I answer that you have to tell me how it is you never once mentioned you were a cop. You talked about coworkers and dealing with assholes but nothing you said ever hinted at you being a cop.”

“You’re right and it wasn’t by chance, I’m sorry. Especially, considering just how much it means to you. I guess for the longest time it’s always been something I hold back until I feel comfortable or the person feels comfortable enough with me. With you, I always felt you holding a part of yourself back and that you were skittish and I didn’t want to scare you away. There are many people, not just you who have a preconceived picture in their head and most people, they think cops are dicks. Yes, there are other officers I’ve seen who get off on the power trip of their badge and I’ve seen some do things I wish I hadn’t. So, I can’t say I blame people for the way they think. For me though, that’s not who I am and I would expect people to get that. But for them to feel like they can’t be real with me because I’ll arrest for something stupid, I still can’t understand that.

Then there are some women out there who like the uniform and get off on it. For them, it could be any guy and they’re all over him.

So yeah, it wasn’t by accident and that wasn’t really fair. Again, I’m sorry for holding back on you. I won’t say I regret it because then we wouldn’t be here now. You would have heard it and ran and I might not have been able to catch you.”

His eyes are soft and since he’s right and I feel the same way, I give him a smile to let him know it’s okay. The look of relief on his face makes me feel better. “When I first moved to Austin I had a roommate and she was dating a cop. He was very controlling, he didn’t want to live with her, he needed his own space. Yet, he had a say over who she lived with. I hadn’t changed my name yet and he figured a Senator’s daughter was safe. He was the one who set the no man in the apartment rule and warned me if I was going to be one of those sixth street crawlers I would be out on my ass. He was there a lot and he told her what she could and couldn’t eat, told her when he thought she was getting fat and what she could wear. He didn’t want her wearing make up unless they went out together. It made me ill.

Then there’s Claire, I know I complained once about her to you. Her boyfriend’s also a cop and an asshole, controlling and manipulative. It’s weird, sometimes it seems like he doesn’t even want to be with her but he doesn’t end it.

He reminds me of my father. My father had been a Marine, it seems like all of them, soldiers, cops and anyone with a badge they’re all alike. Controlling, giving orders, and demanding. My father has about pounded out all of who my mother ever was before he met her. She’s what he made her, pretty, empty and a puppet.”

“Is that why you changed your name to your mother’s maiden name, Dixon?”

I nod and thank the waitress for the juice. Remembering the backlash from me changing my last name causes a twist in my lips that some would call a smile, but it isn’t. “He cut me off completely then and I was relieved for it. I haven’t talked to him actually since about a week after he left me at the hospital. He was demanding I come to work for him in DC, it was laughable. He’d pretty much ignored me for the last four years. He was so pissed when he found out I didn’t apply to Ivy League schools. I just wanted to go to the University of Washington in Tacoma. I was afraid to leave my mom alone with him, I think her coming to visit me three or four times a year was the closest thing she got to freedom. Then after that night in the hospital he only referred to me as the whore or slut. Why would he think I would want anything to do with him?”

“Why doesn’t she leave him?” He reaches across the table and takes my hand in his. I had no idea my hand had curled into a fist and have to consciously unfurl it. Stroking the back of my hand his touch is soothing and light.

“It’s something I talk to her about at least once a year, it used to be every time she came to see me in Tacoma. She won’t, she’s too scared. He married her when she was nineteen and he was forty two, did you catch that? I’m assuming you hit up Google?” He nods. “She was just a kid. She didn’t know better. Had no idea what she was getting herself into. He’s got her so brainwashed, she can’t comprehend life without him. What will I do? Who will I be? She asks me, when I try to talk to her. She does the committees and the volunteering but they’re all ones he picked out. I know he’s hit her and hurt her. When she came to visit me in the hospital she tried to tell me not to listen to my father. What would he know about what I had gone through, for him it was a regular Thursday night.”

“Jesus christ.” He exhales as he squeezes my hand lightly.

The end game is looming, but whether the last of the Ito family will find his happily ever after is in the balance.

Tomi Ito must deal with the knowledge that the woman he's loved forever, Gillian Edgemont, thinks he's abandoned her in her time of need. But when he's abducted, she's there to help save him.

As the finale looms, does it include a future for Tomi and Gillian? Or will it all turn to ashes?

SORM excerpt

Even as Gillian scanned the view, she noted that the pilot slipped a headpiece over his ear so he could communicate with the rescue worker. She wished she knew who was in the water, but his words were too low to overhear.

In the main cabin, she could hear bangs and groaning equipment. The scene on the view screen changed to the belly of their craft. She could see a man dangling in the air, and in the water, someone clutching another person. She said a silent prayer that one of them was Tomi.

Tension rose in the cabin, thick and heady. The rescuer plunged into the cold waters. A harness was handed over and gripped while the officer dealt with the other. From the movements, Gillian could tell that the person was panicked. Slowly, the first harness rose and she could tell it wasn't Tomi, as the person had long hair and bare legs. She sucked in a breath as the second person in the water was assisted into another harness, then he or she rose with the rescuer. Even though she craned, the outline of the officer obscured her view. She sucked in an unsteady breath, clenched her hands together, and waited.

When Gillian was sure she could last no longer, the door opened with a bang. She quickly looked up, anticipation sizzling along every nerve ending.

There in the doorway was Tomi, wet and shivering, but very much alive. In his arms was a woman, bedraggled and dirty, but he held her so tenderly that any hopes or dreams Gillian harbored melted away. There was never any hope for her and the feelings that burned in her chest.

Without a word, Gillian turned away and fought the sting of tears in her eyes. She noted the sounds of joyous reunion between brother and sister, but she kept her gaze averted, to give them privacy, she piously told herself. When the pilot ordered them strapped in, she breathed a silent sigh of relief. She knew that this torture, him being so close but now forever so far away, would come to an end sooner rather than later.

Just as she was sure she'd be spared, Tomi spoke. "Gillian, thank you for coming to find me."

The clog of tears filled her throat, but she managed to croak, "It was nothing."

"It means a lot to me." He reached out and touched her hand, and she bit back the gasp that rose.

Nerves in her hand jumped and thrummed, but she ignored them. "Honestly, I'm just pleased I could help."
She glanced in his direction, taken aback by the directness in his gaze before the woman beside him shuddered. He scooped her closer and Gillian turned away.

Tarot the Magician by Tim Kane

SOR Tarot The Magician VBT BannerGenre: YA Fantasy/Paranormal

After discovering an ancient tarot deck, Kassandra Troy's life takes a thrilling and frightening turn. She triggers The Magician card and releases the mysterious and captivating Luke Rykell.

Luke has a dark secret. He wants the magical deck for himself. To save herself and her friends, Kassandra is forced to journey into the Tarot cards. But can she find a way out of the deck unscathed or will the darkness which follows her destroy them all?

People never talked about him dying. Instead they got all weepy and switched subjects. As if avoiding the topic would somehow make everything smiles and sunshine. It didn’t. When someone disappears, it’s like unraveling a sweater. Cut one strand, and the whole thing falls apart.

Kassandra caught a glimpse of her tangled hair in the mirror of Mom’s dresser. She looked frayed and disconnected—a lump of useless yarn who once was a girl.

Shaking her head, she scrounged through the cluttered bottles of nail polish, searching for a wadded up bill. Mom had to be good for a ten or twenty. No way was she going to borrow from Auntie Jo. Not again. Just a couple of new killer tops would make her grungy jeans work. School started tomorrow and Kassandra dreaded it. Kids never talked to the new girl. Especially the one with a lousy wardrobe.

The dresser reeked of cigarette smoke. At least if she found some money, it’d be one less dollar Mom could spend on cancer sticks. Kassandra’s fingers brushed a scrap of paper. Snatching it, her fishnet glove snagged on a bottle, sending the nail polish tumbling to the carpet with a clunk. The top popped off and red liquid oozed onto the café au lait carpet.

She scrunched her face. So not how she planned it. Kassandra eyed the crinkled paper in one hand. A lousy receipt.

Morning light shimmered off the puddle, already soaking into the carpet. Kassandra looped a blond curl over one ear and, yanking a handful of tissues from the box, dropped to the floor. Her bare knees brushed the carpet, the holes in her jeans from actual wear and tear and not fashionable rips. She so needed a new pair.

“Kassandra?” Auntie Jo’s voice glided down the hallway. “You coming, sugar?”

Kassandra’s heart kicked into high gear. She was supposed to be getting ready in her own room, not rummaging through Mom’s. “Sure, in a sec.”

The sticky bottle of nail polish went in the trash. Mom wouldn’t miss it. She had enough shades to create her own color chart at Home Depot. Kassandra dabbed at the spill with a wadded up tissue and then sat back to inspect the stain. The red blob was a stop sign smeared onto the carpet. Kassandra dumped a bottle of nail polish remover on the spot, sending up a wave of bitter fumes. The splotch, now pink, still drenched the carpet. She dragged over the throw rug by the bed and tossed it across the stain. Good enough.

Kassandra dashed down a hall lined with photos of unknown relatives and flew through her door just as Auntie Jo rounded the corner. The woman wore an Egyptian shawl draped over a wide body the color of deep mahogany. A purple scarf reigned in her tightly curled afro.

“The morning is young and thy chariot shan’t wait forever.” Auntie Jo waved one arm as if she were some kind of royalty.

What happens when an OCD professor collides with a risk-taking woman who won't take 'no' for an answer?

Content Warning: contains graphic sex and mature content

After lunch, another hour of conversation, and a long swim, Cali lounged on the chair by the pool. Her shoulder-length blonde hair dried naturally and curled at the ends. Carter watched as she closed her eyes and enjoyed the afternoon sun. Her tanned skin glistened with sunscreen and her tiny bikini was almost dry.

He wondered how many hours of intense workouts created a body like hers.

"Are you admiring me again?" she asked with her eyes still closed.

"How many tattoos do you have?"

"Wouldn't you like to know?" She giggled.

"I would."

As improper as it was, he couldn't take his gaze away from her right nipple. The evidence straining against her damp bikini indicated a piercing of some sort. He'd never been more fascinated by anyone before. Throughout the years he'd seen quite a few attractive young women on campus, but he never acted on impulse when it came to students, no matter how tempting. Cali wasn't a student. She was a quirky, attractive woman who was very much in touch with her sexuality. She turned him on. He wanted to explore with her.

"Four."

He sat on the edge of the lounge chair, taking her right ankle into his hand. "Here." He outlined the small butterfly that permanently marked her skin.

"That's one." She opened her eyes when he trailed his hand up her leg and to her hip.

It had been years since he had pursued a woman. He'd gotten married when he was twenty-four and stayed faithful through the whole fourteen years of that turbulent relationship.

"Two." He swept his fingers over the pink-and-purple-colored rose petals sprinkled along her hip.

"Keep going."

He took her hand in his and examined more rose petals on the inside of her wrist. "Do they hold significance?" He traced his fingertips over the tattoo, indulging in her smooth skin beneath his touch. The way her flesh prickled in response instigated his actions.

"I like roses." She sat up, placed her legs across his lap, and leaned closer to his face. "My mother had the most beautiful rose bushes in our backyard." She pushed her hair to the side and tilted her neck. "Four."

"It's exquisite," he mumbled as he took in the ivy that started at her collarbone and flowed down the back of her shoulder blade.

"I wouldn't have pegged you for a man who likes ink on his woman."
"I'm not usually." He ran his thumb from the start of the tattoo to where it ended on her back. He wanted to feel every inch of her forbidden flesh. She shivered when he stopped. "It goes back to those boundaries you don't have."

Reaching out, she placed her palm on his cheek, directing him closer to her lips. "The question is…" She brushed her mouth against his chin. "Do you have enough for both of us?"

Ghost by Dani-Lyn Alexander

SOR Ghost VBT BannerGenre: Paranormal Romance

After a head injury, Jess begins to see things she can’t explain. She starts to wonder if she’s hallucinating, losing her mind completely...or if something far worse might be happening.

SORM excerpt

A scream erupted from her throat, dragging her forcefully from the nightmare that held her captive. Heart pounding, chest heaving, she rolled over and reached to pull the pillow over her head. The lingering fear from the nightmare morphed into sheer terror when she realized she was no longer lying in her warm, cozy bed, but on a cold, hard surface. She froze, too afraid to move, and opened her eyes just enough to study her surroundings.

“What the..?” Although she laid in total darkness, Jess knew exactly where she was. The bumps and crevices of the rough terra cotta tile, combined with the lingering scent of potpourri, were unmistakable. How had she gotten here? Why were there no lights? Pain slammed through her head when she tried to sit up. Nausea threatened to overwhelm her, and she forced the bile back down. She lowered herself to the floor, gently resting her cheek against the cool tile. Maybe she could just lay here for the rest of the night.

Reality intruded, and she knew she had to stand. She moved slowly, pulling her knees to her chest and resting her forehead against them. Taking slow breaths and tentatively rubbing at the tender spot on her temple, she was surprised when her hand came away sticky. “Ugh…what’s on my hand?”

She struggled to her feet and slapped her hands against the wall to stop the room from spinning. Once the world came into focus, she padded to the kitchen, hoping to rid herself of the coppery taste that was threatening to choke her.

Pain exploded behind her eyes and took her breath away when she turned on the light. She grabbed a clean towel from the drawer, filled it with ice, and pressed it against her throbbing head. Elbows on the kitchen counter, she leaned into the cold of her impromptu ice pack. Numbness prickled her skin.

How had she ended up on the floor? How long had she lain there? Had she fallen? Passed out? The throbbing pain made thinking difficult. Aspirin. Aspirin would help. She reached for the bottle in the cabinet and then filled a glass with cool water. When she raised her head to drink, she caught sight of her reflection in the window above the sink.

With darkness pressing heavily against the glass, she was able to see herself quite clearly. The disheveled woman who met her gaze startled her. Her short, dark hair stuck out in all directions but, when she tried to run her fingers through the rat’s nest in an effort to tame it, she met resistance. The sticky mess had already started to dry, leaving her hair full of knots. She’d bled worse than she’d thought. The pink t-shirt she’d worn to bed was also blood splattered.

“What happened to me? Was I sleepwalking?” She sipped her water, but dumped the remainder down the sink when her stomach rebelled. Her heart pounded in her chest, keeping time with the throbbing in her temples. There has to be a logical explanation for this. Did I get up to go to the bathroom and trip? That didn’t make sense, even to her own confused mind. When her gaze returned to the window, she couldn’t fight the fear that clutched at her throat.

“Oh, my…” she told the woman who stared back from the window, but left the sentence unfinished when she caught movement from behind her in the reflection. Instinctively ducking to the side, Jess turned to find the room empty. Her heart thundered in her already constricted chest, her breath coming in short, shallow gasps. Tremors shook her body as she struggled desperately to fight off the impending panic attack. The hammering of her heart made it hard for her to hear anything else, but she strained her ears to listen.

The kitchen doorway led to the small living room directly across from the window. Had someone been moving through the room? Was that how she’d ended up crumpled on the floor at the bottom of the stairs? Had she been pushed?

Calculated by Renee Novelle

An investigative journalist gets an unlikely tip from a mysterious informant. Dismissing it as impossible, she disregards the information and drops the story. Until the informant turns up dead, as predicted.

Plunged into the murky waters of a seedy underground prostitution ring, this psychological thriller provides twist upon dark twist in a story that would ultimately pin the church and several government officials in the largest murder cover-up the city has ever witnessed.

But is it true, or has the journalist merely been used as a pawn in a greater scheme? And how many people is she willing to sacrifice trying to figure it out?

When she arrived at the little facility her building provided, a quick look around confirmed she was the only one there. Just as she’d hoped, and exactly how she liked it to be. Smiling in satisfaction, she flipped on the television that was perched on the wall, and turned up the music on her iPod as loud as she could handle it. The multiple distractions would help her get through the extra mile she was planning to conquer. With chilled water bottle in place, she cranked up the treadmill to a nice brisk pace.

As her breathing picked up speed and her muscles began to warm, Ana’s eye caught a red flash along the bottom of the screen. Breaking News filled the bar, and the too-chipper-for-their-own-good reporters were suddenly getting serious. Since the volume was still muted, Ana couldn’t understand exactly what was going on, only that they were showing the wide stretch of river that ran along the outskirts of the city. She wiped the first beads of sweat from her brow, and used the remote to turn the volume of the television higher while simultaneously adjusting her music.

As the reporters spoke, home-video footage of something floating in the water rolled before her eyes. The camera zoomed in, the frame ever so shaky, and it became clearly apparent that the “something” was a person - face down with long brown hair spread out like a Catholic halo. It appeared another victim had been pulled out of the water; the count was quickly tallying up. A young woman this time, and possibly one who had gone missing the night before.

Ana’s pulse skipped a few beats as they replayed the video over and over. There was something familiar about the long, lean body. Slowing the treadmill to a stop, she ripped the ear buds from her head to give the segment her entire attention.

...it appears at first glance that the victim suffered from a deep cut to the throat, and received multiple stab wounds to the chest...

The beads of accumulated sweat turned cold on Ana’s brow. She immediately reached for her phone and dialed Kylie’s number.

“What the hell, Ana?” Came her friend’s groggy voice.

“Turn your TV on. Channel four. Hurry.” Ana said, eyes transfixed to the screen in front of her. “Recognize that face?”

...It’s thought the victim may be one of the young girls recently reported missing. The screen flashed candids of three possible women. All brunettes. All tall and thin. All roughly the same age. Among them was a photo of Mara, just as Ana had expected there would be.

But the body was too bloated and disfigured to be absolutely certain, and an autopsy would be needed.

... The body will be taken in for processing where officials hope to shed more light on the case in the near future. In the mean time, they’re cautioning residents to avoid....

“Did you see that?” Ana’s voice escaped in more of a demand than a question. “Please tell me I’m seeing things.”

“Oh my god...” Kylie whispered into the receiver, confirming the dread that was building in Ana’s stomach. “Do you really think it’s her?”

“I know for a fact it is.” Ana declared, the pull in her gut getting stronger by the minute. “The autopsy will confirm it.”

“So, what does this mean exactly now?”

“That maybe I should have been listening a little closer when I was talking to Mara.” She said with regret as she swiped her forehead with the back of her hand. “And maybe I should have asked more questions. There’s a story here, I’m sure of it now.”

“What are you going to do?” Kylie’s voice was decidedly more alert now.

Ana shook her head. “I have no idea.”

Though if she were to be truthful with herself in that moment, she’d already made up her mind. Ana flipped off the television, and left the little gym to get started.
