A Second Chance Holiday by Lacey Wolfe

Genre: Romance

All Maggie Carver wants for Christmas is for things to work out with her long time boyfriend Brock. But with his work schedule and putting her second, it doesn’t seem like that’s going to happen—especially because he plans to work on Christmas. She goes back to her family ranch for the holidays, alone and heartbroken.

Brock Wells thought Maggie was the one. That they’d be together through thick and thin. Before she heads home for the holidays, she ends things with him. While he loves her, he isn’t sure it’s worth fighting for any longer.

As the holidays draw closer and the need to spend the days with loved ones becomes overwhelming, can Maggie and Brock find their way back to one another, or will they let their stubborn nature get the best of them?

~Excerpt~

“If you love something let it go. If it’s meant to be, it’ll find its way back to you.” Maggie tightened her hands around the steering wheel.

She loved Brock Wells with everything in her. From the moment she met him, things were different. He was kind, compassionate, understanding, and damn good in the bedroom. Lately, however, he’d been distant. It was as though they suddenly just couldn’t get along.

She flipped her blinker on and turned on to the dirt road to Carver Ranch. She needed the guidance of her Aunt Gail, her mom’s sister. She lost her mother a few years ago to cancer and her father took off when she was a young child. She’d been in touch with him as an adult, but the feeling of betrayal by him never went away.

Her aunt Gail always knew what to tell her to make her feel better. With Christmas a few days away, Maggie wanted a good holiday with family. But most of all, she wanted to spend it with Brock, which wasn’t going to happen.

She parked the car and stared up at the two story farm house. Taking a deep breath, she left the vehicle. Warm apple and fresh spices welcomed her. Aunt Gail must be baking. She climbed the steps to the wraparound porch and wasted not time going inside.

Everything looked the same. A country, comfy themed place. Plaid couches, honey colored wood furniture. Fun little rooster knick knacks scattered throughout. The only difference was the added Christmas lights. The Christmas tree was most likely on the back screened-in portion of the porch. Her aunt liked to have one room she could fully deck out. One day she’d be a grandma, and she’d spoil those kids rotten.

“Aunt Gail,” she called as she made her way slowly through the home.

She took in each square foot she could, already feeling warmth around her heart. She was where she was supposed to be.

Aunt Gail walked out of the kitchen, wearing a blue apron with white ruffles. “Maggie Rose! You’re early. What are you doing here?”

Maggie wrapped her arms around her aunt and snuggled in as close as she could. The woman held her back tenderly. This is what it would be like if her mother was still here.

“I’ve missed you so much.” Aunt Gail pulled back and placed her hands on Maggie’s shoulders. “You look wonderful. Where is Brock?”

Maggie sighed and before she could speak, her aunt’s eyebrow had already lifted.

“What’s going on?”

She’d hoped to have been able to keep it a secret for a little while before her aunt figured out there was trouble in paradise, however the woman was too smart. Maggie supposed being the mom to three mischievous boys would do that. “I left him.” Sort of.

Shock crossed her face. “You what? Come in this kitchen and sit down. Tell me what happened.”

Maggie followed her into the kitchen, where she saw several pies sitting on the counter. The Carvers always had a ton of food. “Can I get a piece of fresh cherry pie?”

“Don’t tell my kids.” Aunt Gail sliced up the pie and put two pieces on separate plates. “Whipped cream?”

“Please.” She was sulking and needed comfort food, and her aunt made homemade whipped cream.

“All right, well give me a second to mix some up.” She gathered the heavy whipping cream and sugar and added the ingredients to her mixing bowl. “Please tell me Brock didn’t do anything bad.”

Maggie rested her chin on her fist. “It just wasn’t working anymore.”

Gail spun the spoon quickly through the bowl. “The last time I saw you two, I was certain you’d be coming here this Christmas with a ring.”

She had too. Things had appeared that way, but then he got a new promotion and work came first. All the time. He traveled a good bit and when he was home, he was on his computer working. When it came to sex, his libido was out the door. They hardly ever slept at one another’s places anymore. This Christmas, she really thought they’d be moving in together, especially since her lease was up the first of January. Boy had things changed. “We just fell apart. Out of sync.”

Aunt Gail brought the plates to the table and set one in front of Maggie. Not only did it look tasty, but the sweet cherry aroma made her mouth water.

“I’m sorry to hear that. Can it be fixed?”

“I don’t know.” She paused and chewed her bottom lip.

“What did you do? I can tell by that look.” She pointed a fork at her sternly.

“I kinda sent him a text before I came here and told him when I got back, I’d get my things from his place.” She stabbed her pie. “I was so upset he wasn’t coming here with me. And he knew how important this was.”

Her aunt lifted a mug to her mouth. “What did he say when you sent the text?”

That was the worst part. “Nothing. I saw he read the message but he never said a damn thing back.”

This is a short, steamy holiday story.

Excerpt:

You're going to make this hard on me, aren't you?” An uneasy smile graced her pouty lips.
“I'm sorry, but you have to clarify this for me.”

“I know you spend this night by yourself every year. I usually do too because of my dad's work schedule. I didn’t see why either one of us should be alone tonight.” She leaned closer to his face allowing him to take in more of her enticing scent. “I wanted to be with you. I mean, I want to be with you.”

He continued to run his fingertips along her cheek and jawbone indulging in the feel of her soft skin. “You didn’t want me to be alone? That's very sweet.” Perhaps he had misunderstood her intentions. For some odd reason, disappointment filled him again. Maybe he wanted her to admit to more.

“You probably think I'm crazy. I swear I'm not a stalker.”

He laughed.

“I don’t know what it is, but I'm very intrigued by you.” When she looked away from him he sensed her embarrassed over her words. Obviously, it took a lot for her to come to him tonight.

He pressed his palm to her face. “I was thinking the same thing about you.”

Her big brown eyes widened as he raised her head to look at him.

“I'll be honest, I haven't given you much thought through the years, other than you being my son's shy, awkward friend, but tonight when I saw you, I couldn’t believe the woman you've become. You're breathtaking.”

She shook her head.

“You don’t believe me?” He twirled a stand of her hair around his finger. “Why not?”

“No one's ever said that about me before.”

“Hmm.” He didn’t know what possessed him, but he brushed his lips against her jaw. He had to know if her skin would be as soft to his lips as it was against his fingers.

She quivered as he lingered against her face.

“Still cold?” he asked.

“No.” She stared directly into his eyes. “Quite the opposite.”

“Can I kiss you?”

Counting Cowboys by Lacey Wolfe

Genre:Contemporary Romance

Can a hot cowboy convince Lauren to stay in Texas and take another chance on love?

Tucker Carver likes to have fun and has no intention of settling down anytime soon. He handles the business side of Carver Ranch for his family, and on the day he's scheduled to meet with their accountant, he instead meets a beautiful woman who changes everything.

Lauren Ford packed up and moved to Texas to start over after her fiancé had an affair with her best friend. Her father's retiring and has offered to let her take over his accounting firm. When she meets Tucker she's immediately taken with him, despite his reputation as a ladies' man. Knowing she isn't looking for love, or even if she wants to stay in Texas, she decides to have fun with Tucker and keep her feelings at bay.

After one taste of Lauren, Tucker has other plans. Lauren is the woman he wants, but for some reason she's resisting. And it doesn't help when her ex-fiancé shows up in town wanting her to go back to Georgia with him. Can Tucker convince her that his feelings are true, or will he lose her forever?

Content Warning: contains adult language and explicit sexual scenes

~Excerpt~

Lauren stared at the papers in front of her, but none of it registered. All she could focus on was the half naked man. The hot, sweaty, tanned man who was now naked in his shower only feet away from her.

She shook her head and rubbed her thighs. Enough. It wasn't like Tucker was the first sexy man she'd seen. She wasn't blind or innocent, but something about him got her panties moist quick. Hopefully, she could make it through this accounting meeting without ripping her own clothes off and offering herself up to him. She had no doubt he would be an awesome lover. The man worked with his hands all day; surely he knew a thing or two that could please her.

Seriously, enough.

Lauren straightened her back and stared at the stack of papers he'd given her. There were receipts, printouts, and such. Tucker seemed to keep good records, so that would make things easier. She removed her computer from her bag and turned it on. After she pulled up the file for Carver Ranch, she studied it once more to familiarize herself with it.

This was a profitable ranch. Last year had been one of their roughest years, but so far, this year was already better. She was sure once she started to fill in the stuff he'd supplied her with, she'd see they'd come back strong from the previous year.

"Everything there?"

Lauren jumped in her seat.

"Sorry, didn't mean to scare you."

Tucker, now dressed, came over and sat next to her. Whatever soap he'd used attacked her senses in a good way. How did someone get out of the shower, yet still smell like fresh cut pines?

She shouldn't do it, but she did anyway. She let her gaze wander over his body. The black t-shirt he wore hugged his wide chest, letting her get the full view of his muscles.

Lauren looked away quickly. "Yeah, I think this is it." She flipped through the stack. "You're free to do whatever while I do this. I know you've got a lot to do."

"Can I get you something to drink?" He stood, and her focus went straight to his crotch.

Oh God. She glanced up quick to see him smirking. The man knew he was sex on a stick with his sandy blond hair and blue eyes. "Do you have some tea?"

"Sweet?"

"Uh, yeah."

He winked. "I'll be back."

"Take your time." The farther away he was, the more she could concentrate on her work. She wasn't sure what had come over her, but the sooner she got done with this job, the better. Then she wouldn't have to see him again until next quarter.

Found, Near Water by Katherine Hayton

Rena Sutherland wakes from a coma into a mother’s nightmare. Her daughter’s is missing – lost for four days – but no one has noticed; no one has complained; no one has been searching.

As the victim support officer assigned to her case, Christine Emmett puts aside her own problems as she tries to guide Rena through the maelstrom of her daughter’s disappearance.

A task made harder by an ex-husband desperate for control; a paedophile on early-release in the community; and a psychic who knows more than seems possible.

And intertwined throughout, the stories of six women; six daughters lost.

I set out the chairs in a circle. In my head I counted off each person as I placed their seat. Terry, dead daughter; Ilene, missing daughter; Kendra, missing daughter; Joanne, sick daughter; Christine, dead daughter. That last one is me, by the way.

There used to be a need for more chairs. I had quite the group running at one stage. Not now. We’ve dwindled and whittled our way to a close knit bunch. Like a knitting circle with barbed tongues driving all the young and optimistic members away.

I remember when I was talked into setting up this group. I was whining away to an old colleague one day and she mentioned that I may be helped by a support group. A support group! I “reminded” her that I was a fully qualified psychiatrist who had once had a roaring career until I realised how futile the entire field was. I wasn’t someone who attended a support group. I was the one to run it.

Famous last words.

There was a crunch of gravel outside and I walked to the window to have a nosey. Not one of mine. An elderly gent made slow progress towards the temporary library. He swayed so deeply from foot to foot he looked like a Weeble in full wobble.

I laid out a half packet of stale gingernuts which had mysteriously survived in our pantry and hoped that no one was feeling too hungry.

Interview
1. What is your favorite Joke?
Some pieces of string walk into a bar. The first one walks up to place an order, and the barman gives him a long, hard look and asks ‘Are you a piece of string?’
The piece of string answers ‘Yes’, and the barman responds ‘We don’t serve pieces of string in here.’
Dejected, the piece of string walks away empty-handed and joins his friends. They huddle together for a moment and then one of them has an idea. He ties himself up and has his friends pull the strands of his top end apart. When he’s ready he walks up the bar.
The barman looks him up and down and says, ‘We don’t serve pieces of string in here. Aren’t you a piece of string?’
The piece of string looks indignant and replies, ‘I’m a frayed knot!’

2. Where do you get your best ideas?
In planes and buses. Staring out windows and not thinking of anything in particular tends to attract new ideas to fill up the empty void. I can sit at a desk and stare at a piece of blank paper without being able to think of a single way out of a plot-hole, or a better way of handling a dead scene, but if I’m travelling somewhere they just come.

3. What do you do to relax?
Watch TV, read and randomly surf the internet. Usually all at the same time. I also like to play computer games, although they can have the opposite effect dependent upon the skill level I’ve chosen and the fire-power and stealth of the opposition. Sometimes it all gets too much and I just have to try to harvest some fruit and veges in Farm Heroes. For some reason matching little symbols together on a screen and making sure that they’re the right kind is the type of brainless entertainment that can waste hours of my life. Still, time wasted doing something you enjoy is not wasted time.

4. Do you write about what turns you on?
If I was turned on by anything that I write about I would need to be locked up for a million years and then some. That’s disgusting, and I resent the implication, although I did mention food a few times in the last one. I’m quite turned on by food. Just eating it, you understand, not rolling about naked in it on the floor or anything like that. Normal food turn-on stuff. I’m normal. Normal.

Katherine Hayton is a 41 year old woman who works in insurance, doesn't have children or pets, can't drive, has lived in Christchurch her entire life, and currently resides two minutes’ walk from where she was born.
For some reason she's developed a rich fantasy life. Enjoy.

~Excerpt~

Abby closed her eyes tight and pressed send on her phone. Liam's phone rang once, twice, three times. A bit relieved, she waited to be routed to his voicemail.

"Liam Whitmore's office."

She sucked in a hard breath and nearly dropped the phone. "Uh…hi…this is Abby Haden, Abigail Haden that is."

"Yes, Miss Haden," the receptionist said quickly. "Please hold."

Several seconds passed.

"This is Liam."

"I…" Abby paused, searching her heart one last time. Her grip on her cellphone tightened, and her courage failed. "I…I…"

"What's the holdup?" Liam asked, his voice gruff.

She flinched. "H-holdup?" she stammered.

"Seven hundred fifty thousand dollars, and that's the final offer, Miss Haden. Take it or leave it."

Abby blinked. "That's not—"

"Take it or leave it," Liam interrupted. "I want an answer now."

His brisk tone set her on edge and raised her ire.

Her courage returned. "Fine, but I have a requirement."

His pause felt tangible through the phone, and she feared he'd had second thoughts. Not that she'd back down from her decision.

"What is it?" He nearly growled the question.

She filled her lungs with air. "I want two hundred fifty thousand upon conception, the rest after the baby is born."

Another pause. "We have a deal." His anger had disappeared, his voice holding no hint of emotion.

Abby blew out her pent-up breath. "Okay, good. I've been unable to find a clinic for the…the artificial, um, you know." She placed a cool palm on her flaming hot cheek. If it was possible to die from embarrassment, she'd be a goner for sure.

"I'm not following you, Miss Haden," Liam said. She heard papers shuffling in the background. "I'll have the contract drawn up."

"Artificial insemination," Abby blurted out.

"Artificial insemination?" He sounded taken aback. "I hadn't considered any such thing."

Abby frowned in confusion. "How else are we going to get me pregnant?"

Liam's laughter echoed through the phone. Rich and throaty, it sent a hot tingle down Abby's spine. Goose bumps broke out over her skin.

"Miss Haden, there are such pleasurable ways of making a baby that are quite successful," he said, his voice dropping to a deep rumble over the phone. Abby took a shuddering breath as it did obscene things to her insides. His tone returned to its more business-like manner. "I have a cabin in Aspen. As soon as your cycle is at the most likely time for you to conceive we'll fly up there for a week," he said. "AI would take too much time," he added.

"I-I didn't plan on that," Abby stuttered, her mind reeling. Sex hadn't been in the equation when she'd made her decision.Sex? With Liam? Oh my God. Her heart kicked into overdrive. "Look, Mr. Whitmore—"

"I'll set up an appointment with my physician for STD tests. Can you be there tomorrow afternoon by, say…" He paused briefly. "Three-thirty?"

"Mr. Whitmore, I—"

"Do you know when you'll most likely ovulate again?"

Abby blinked, she was being steamrolled.

"Miss Haden, it's a simple question. I need to know."

She looked at her calendar, she'd already figured up the days in case she'd gotten an appointment at one of the clinics she called. "Um, next week, but listen—"

Liam pushed on. "I'll have everything set up. We can leave for Aspen late Sunday evening. My personal assistant will be in touch tomorrow morning to give you directions to my physician's office."

"Mr. Whitmore, there's no way I can get off work for a week on such short notice. It's Tuesday," she insisted, trying to backpedal.

"It's taken care of. Don't worry, Abigail," he said.

The sound of her given name rolling off his tongue caught her off guard. It stopped her next objection dead in its tracks.

"What's your contact number?" he asked.

Abby gave him her cellphone number.

After a quick 'thank you' Liam hung up, leaving Abby in a bit of a stupor. His driven personality explained his business success, as well as the rumored success he had with women. He was a raging river and she had been helplessly swept along in its current.

Pax has more than a one-night stand on his mind, but will his bad-boy persona and demanding schedule ruin any chances of a happily ever after?

Content Warning: contains explicit sex and adult content

~Excerpt~

"Can I walk you to your car?" Pax asked.

"Thank you." Sophia got up from the table and took his hand. "I'm parked right out front."

He led her across the dance floor, waving to the few people who were left, and then out to the parking lot.

"It's that one." She pointed to her beat-up car, the one she'd bought her freshman year of college. It was used then but it still managed to get her where she needed to go. "Probably not as nice as what you drive."

He leaned her against the car and wrapped his arms around her waist. Her heart pounded hard against her chest, strumming loud between her ears. She could smell the beer that lingered on his breath. His hazel eyes narrowed as he swiped the tip of his tongue along his top lip before tilting his head.

"I have a feeling I'm going be seeing you in my dreams tonight." He sighed as he brought his mouth to hers. "Give me something to remember these next few days."

She nodded as she placed her hands on his broad shoulders and guided him to her, closing any space between them. When his warm lips touched hers, she thought she would explode. A burn coursed through her and settled between her legs. The mild tingling she'd experienced when they danced was nothing compared to the intensity she felt now.

As he deepened the kiss, his tongue massaged hers. Increasing his hold on her hips, he pinned her between the car and his massive thighs. She tightened her grip on him when his erection grazed her center. Every nerve ending in her begged to be satiated. The ache inside her stomach moved lower until the dampness invaded her panties. Her nipples poked against the thin material of her silk bra.

When she moaned into his mouth, he placed one last kiss on her lips before pulling away. He looked at her for a moment, pressing his forehead to hers as he stuttered a few words.

"That was…well, I've never…" He ran his fingers through his hair. "You have me tongue-tied, sugar. That doesn't happen often."

Now she wanted to know what else he could do with that tongue.

"You best get in that car and drive away before I…"

She'd never wanted to have a one-night stand more than she did at that very moment. Maggie had said if there was ever a guy to have one with, Pax would be the one. He was a no-strings-attached player. Why hadn't he asked her to go home with him?

"Be safe driving home." He reached for the handle and opened her door. "You have some sweet dreams. I know I sure will."

Sleep? That was the last thing on her mind.

The First Night by Sidda Lee Tate

Genre(s): Erotic Contemporary Romance

Can the last place she needs to be become the first night of her forever?

She planned to meet her coworkers for drinks and be home in a few hours. Getting drunk and staying out all night was not an option. Not for Kayla Dobbs. Going to a bar was already pushing her limits. Between her full-time job and night classes, there was no time to spare for a social life, and certainly no time for a relationship. But when she meets Gannon, the sexy bartender whose hypnotic eyes seem to follow her every move, she wishes things could be different.

Although Kayla doesn't recognize him, Gannon knows exactly who she is—she was the one girl in high school he'd always wanted but had been afraid to pursue. He's changed a lot since high school though, and maybe now he has a chance at making that dream come true.

As she breaks free from her self-induced lifestyle of studying and work, Kayla realizes that no matter how concrete her life plan is, sometimes it only takes one night, one person, to alter it forever.

Content Warning: contains descriptive sex and strong language

~Excerpt~

Music blared from the band, pounding in Kayla's ears and masking the nervous hammering in her chest. She tossed the apprehension from her head. The bartender was watching her again, and she was glad. After all, it had been a long time since anyone held her interest and he…well, he seemed to be matching her awareness. She was determined to talk to him, and with liquid courage having her back, she was in rare form. Feeling tenacious and certain, she licked her lips to make them shine and walked toward the faintly familiar man.

The closer she got to the bar, the more the courage escaped her. Never in her life had she approached a man she was attracted to. "Just go to the bar and order a drink," she said quietly to herself. "He won't bite."

Kayla grinned, took a deep breath, and settled on a bar stool. She didn't have to wait. The bartender met her as she sat. His gaze held hers for a second longer than she was comfortable with, and her breath hitched in her throat. She moved her stare to the shelves of bottles behind him. Without her asking, he placed a shot of tequila in front of her. She slowly traced the rim with her index finger, trying to think of something clever to say when he sat another shot on the worn mahogany bar top. "Thanks, but I can't handle two more. I'd like to be able to walk out of here."

He held the extra glass up to her eye level, leaning toward her, his eyes burning into hers. "This one is for me. I'd like you to be able to walk out of here too. Let's have a toast."

People around the bar repeatedly shouted out their orders, but the bartender didn't seem to hear them, or if he did, he didn't acknowledge them. Two other guys serving drinks took up the slack.

Kayla picked up the small glass of liquid meant for her and slowly batted her lashes. "A toast to what, exactly?"

She couldn't help but notice the black scribe tattoo on the inside of his upper arm and wondered what it said, but didn't allow her eyes to dwell as they followed his arm to his shoulder and to his neck. She imagined her tongue trailing across his skin and quickly flushed.

He smiled, and his eyes sparkled as he clinked his glass to hers. "To four-inch, platinum heels and jeans that make an ass like yours trigger heart attacks for all that may lay their eyes upon it."

Kayla laughed out loud. He had to be joking, how cheesy. "Well, I wouldn't say it has such an extreme effect on everyone. Does a line like that work on every female?" She licked her hand where he'd showed her earlier and grabbed the salt shaker.

He leaned in closer, inches from her, his gaze intense. "I couldn't be more serious. I've always—"

"Gannon!" one of the other bartenders interrupted. "We've got a fight!"

His eyes narrowed, and irritation spread across his face. He glanced at the anxious announcer behind him and back to Kayla. "Give me a few minutes?"

She watched him jump across the bar and disappear into the crowd. Shivers went across her skin as she noticed the muscles in his arms flex when he lifted himself over the counter. Forgetting about the salt, she tossed the shot back and helped herself to the one he'd left on the bar. As an afterthought, she bit into the lime. His name is Gannon.

Lucy looked around nervously. "What's wrong?" she asked.

"I…don't know," Mia admitted. Perhaps she was just being paranoid.

"Mia." She heard a familiar drawl coming from the shadows. Her heart raced in anticipation as she turned to see the speaker. He walked out of the shadows and toward them like a jaguar stalking his prey, but Mia didn't feel intimidated, only excited by his presence.

"You shouldn't go sneaking around in the darkness. You could give a girl a fright." Mia laughed.

"I could leave, if that would please you," he purred. She loved the way he emphasized please. He gave no indication that he was going to leave. Mia was glad.

"Er, maybe I'll just go wait around the corner," Lucy said awkwardly. Mia nodded to acknowledge her, feeling a little guilty, because she had actually forgotten Lucy was still there.

"So, what are you doing here?" Mia tried to seem nonchalant, despite the fact that her body was having some kind of chemical reaction to his presence.

As if from nowhere, the handsome man produced the bottle of champagne he had purchased earlier that night. "I do believe we have plans to share this." He took a step closer to her.

"Oh. I would, it's just we aren't supposed to socialize with the clients outside of the club," Mia said teasingly, although it was technically true.

"Tell me, Mia, do you always do what you're supposed to do?" It seemed as though he had expected her reaction.

"No, I guess not."

"I've been watching you, Mia."

"I've noticed." She took a step in his direction and looked challengingly into his dark eyes. "So, do you like what you see?"

They were close enough to touch, and Mia's every nerve was tingling, hoping to feel his fingers on her skin. He swayed forward and, for a moment, she thought he was going to kiss her, but he leaned toward her ear instead. "I have a business proposition for you," he breathed, sending a shiver through her body before he pulled away from her.

It took Mia a moment to compose herself, and his eyes sparkled with amusement, no doubt he was enjoying her confusion. "Business…a business proposition?" Mia attempted to sound as casual as she possibly could.

"I'm returning to my home in Tuscany tomorrow," he announced.

Mia felt her heart sink, but was determined not to let it show. "Oh, it must be beautiful in Italy this time of year. But what does that have to do with me?"

"I was hoping you would accompany me."

"I like it here…with you…in the kitchen." His words were enunciated slowly as she gripped the edge of the sink, pressing her back into the hardness…it was no good, she couldn't go back any further.

"Uh-huh." Daisy cleared her throat, trying to eradicate the huskiness present every time she'd spoken to him that morning.

Micah's eyes narrowed. "What's wrong, Daisy?"

"Nothing." She licked her lips.

"Yes, there is. Are you regretting last night?"

She swallowed, but her throat was bone dry. "Last night." She sucked in a breath as he stood in front of her and his hands landed on either side of her with a thud, coming to rest on the countertop.

"Have you got a boyfriend?"

She shook her head. "No."

"Keep it that way."

"Pardon me."

"Don't go looking for one…we have unfinished business."

She lifted her hands and pushed at his hard chest, which of course was a complete waste of time. "Now look here, you can't tell me what to do."

"Yes, I can." He kissed her hard, short, and succinct, and the power behind it made her knees tremble.

"No, you can't. If I want to go out and find a man, I will." She spoke defiantly with her chin held high, but it was lost in the fact that her chin only came up to his chest, and she had to strain further to look him in the eye. Her fingers tingled at the heat emanating from him. The smooth cotton of his shirt was soft to the touch, and his heartbeat was strong as the beat echoed against her fingertips.

"I don't think so."

"Excuse me." She pulled her head back and looked at him.

"Don't start thinking that you can bed someone else."

Her cheeks heated as she tried to push him away. "What the hell? You can't tell me who I can go to bed with…you hardly know me, and you most certainly don't have the right."

"After last night…you do want me, and if I hadn't stopped we would have been in that bed together. I would've made you forget whatever it is that has made you lose your confidence. You're one of the sexiest, most beautiful women I've ever met, and when I do what I have to…I'm going to show you exactly how much I really want you."

"That's just arrogant."

His smile was slow and sexy, and she was pretty sure that had he not been holding her up she would've glided to the floor in a stream of unbridled lust. His hardness was pressed against her stomach.

"Arrogant?" He shook his head. "No, that's not justifying the way I feel, but I'm confident you feel the same way."

"You think so, huh?" When she'd offered him a bed last night he'd refused.

He kissed her again, a little slower this time. Their kisses were hotter than a sauna on a cold day. She could hear the baby in the background, but it was as if she was a distant voice.

He parted from her just enough to speak and she watched his lips move. They were sexy, and she had to push herself to listen to what he was saying.

"I have to fly out today. I have a meeting tomorrow I need to be at, but when Amy goes down for her nap, we need to talk. I need to tell you why I'm here."

She frowned as his words penetrated her sex-befuddled mind. "What do you mean why you're here? I thought it was something to do with a golf course?"

"Actually…that was a lie."

"I knew there was something not quite right about that. If a golf course was going to be built I would've known. Jeez, you can't sneeze on this island without everybody knowing before you've even finished." She narrowed her eyes. Something was definitely going on. She pushed him away, catching him off balance.

At twenty-seven she thought she'd be married with a family, but her boyfriend Jake's cheating ways has her rethinking her future.

After they break up, she visits the garden center for some flower therapy and is approached by Ben Colt, who strikes up a conversation about the hummingbird that fluttered in front of her face, and speaks of myths and angels. Everything about him is delicious, from his scent to his muscular body to his expressive brown eyes.

Everly's journal, a link to all things spiritual, helps to bring her universe together with his, and they collide in a storm of danger, passion, and truths that could change a person's life forever.

Content Warning: contains sensual sex scenes and some violence

~Excerpt~

Everly's head felt light. She followed the street to her hotel, wishing she'd worn her flip-flops, because each click of her heels alerted her to the fact that she might fall and break a leg, or it might out her to strange men that could be following her. She smiled, remembering her pledge to stop worrying about such things and held her bag of leftovers to her chest. Its warmth could still be felt through the foil.

She saw her hotel just a block away. Almost there. The garden in front of it, full of green things and flowers, looked just a little looming in the misty darkness. Too many hidden places. She quickened her pace as she approached it.

Something moved near a tree inside the garden. Maybe it was just a shadow.

Her legs, wobbly now, took on a life of their own and the stride of a lady in heels had left six paces behind her. The shadow moved with a quickness, and she dumped her leftovers and bolted up the stairs, pulling herself by the rails and hurdling two steps at a time. Footsteps followed her. She scrambled through her wallet to find her card-key and nearly dropped it. Her key wasn't there.

"No, no, no!" She panicked. The clanging of her heart in her throat almost made her wretch. The heavy bread, butter, and wine sloshed around in her stomach like a boat lost in a storm.

"Your key, my lady." A deep voice came from behind her and something plastic brushed over her cheek, sending a rash of shivers through her. She slumped against the door.

He had her inside the door in two beats. Handfuls of her hair dropped to the floor as he threw her onto the bed, climbed on top of her, and slammed his hand over her mouth.

"Did you think I was done with you, Miss Afton?" It was the same man who had attacked her before, but he looked more disheveled than ever—his hair was longer and his beard had taken over his face. "If you even try to scream I will slit your throat from ear to ear. Your breath won't even have time to reach that supple little mouth." He clicked open a switchblade and ran its tip over her quivering lips.

A swift urge to knee him swept over her, but then her life flashed before her eyes. Her bunny, her mom, Corrine. The life she'd made for herself writing about love and war and how love would survive it all. Her brother would want her to fight for her life, but if that meant dying then how could she? She squeezed her eyes shut and pictured his face and prayed.

Get me outta this one, twerp. I really need you.

A flurry of noises exploded around her. Splintering wood, the rush of the wind, and the man's body being torn away from her while his knife chinked a chunk of wood out of the floor—and the sound of air leaving his throat.

~Excerpt~

Tessa stopped to stare at him. He was lost in thought, probably making a business deal on some new property. He was shirtless, just the way she liked him. His tight, toned abs disappeared into his navy blue board shorts. She followed the light dusting of hair that created the sexiest line down his rock hard stomach. His hair was a perfect mess, not at all his usual manicured and styled she had become accustomed to. Vacation suited him. He hadn’t bothered to shave either, giving him a rough edge on this late morning.

Totally hot and doable...

“Dragging this morning?” He grinned, but still hadn’t caught a glimpse of her. “Maybe I shouldn’t have–” He stopped when he lifted his head and made eye contact with her through his sunglasses. “Holy crap.” He flipped the sunglasses on his head to get a better look at her.

“What?”

“Where’s the rest of that bathing suit?” He dropped his phone into the beach bag, never taking his eyes away from her body.

“Do you like it?” She spun around, making sure to shake her backside at him before turning to face him.

“There isn’t much to like.” He scrubbed his hand over his stubble covered jaw.

“Oh.” Disappointment filled her when she thought he wasn’t pleased with her appearance. “I thought you’d like it.”

“I love it.” He reached for her hand. “I just meant that, well, you’re practically naked and...”

“This has to do with your possessiveness of my body and your need to censor the thoughts of every guy I come in contact with?”

“Something like that.” He continued to gawk at her. “You can’t go out in public like that.”

“We’re not going in public.” She nodded toward the ocean. “I thought it was a private beach.”

“This one is, but if we were to vacation at a resort I think I’d have to approve your pool attire.”

“Approve?” She fisted her hand on her hip. “Do I need to remind you who gets the final say on what I wear?”

“Let me rephrase that.” He sighed. “If I don’t get a say in what you wear when we’re at a pool or a public beach, I could very well serve fifteen to life.”

Over a remote northern forest, a small plane carrying five teenage friends flies into a freak storm. Struck by lightning, the aircraft crashes and the passengers find themselves cast into a life-changing adventure.

In a hidden valley, a mysterious people gaze at the stormy sky as a glowing object with fiery wings disappears behind a mountain ridge. The astonishing sight reignites an ancient prophecy foretelling the arrival of five chosen ones destined to become bearers of light against a dark storm gathering on humanity's horizon.

In a distant city, a secretive organization led by a shadowy figure initiates a sequence of cataclysmic events designed to wreak havoc across the planet, beginning with a remote mining site in northern Canada.

As the three worlds collide, unlikely heroes arise. Armed with powers entrusted to them by the ancient prophecy and the resilience of their life-long bond, the five teens take a stand against a malevolent foe.

REVIEW: "Astonishingly imaginative and thoughtful. Aegis Rising sets a festive narrative table and makes the reader eagerly anticipate a sequel." ~ Samuel F. Pickering, Professor Emeritus of English, University of Connecticut & Inspiration for the film Dead Poet's Society ~

“That spot’s too small for this plane!” Kody pointed out urgently.

Six pairs of eyes frantically scanned the surroundings below.

“Aw, man!” Jag exclaimed. “The fire’s spreading in along the wing!” That was followed by another shout from the cockpit. “We’re losing airspeed! We have to land immediat—”

He was cut off by a loud blast. The right engine cowling burst apart. The plane was now trailing smoke and flame over the forest, no more than a thousand feet above the tree-tops. Like an injured dragon, the red Comanche bucked and twisted over alpine firs that punctuated the landscape.
