The Bowen Series

MORE THAN MEETS THE INK
Author: Elle Aycart
Series: Bowen #1
~ SYNOPSIS ~
Wickedly sexy James Bowen is a bad boy of the highest order -- tattoos and attitude included -- which unfortunately ranks way up on Tate's not-a-chance-in-hell list, right there along with skydiving naked over Teheran and juggling Ebola vials just for kicks. But what the heck, she's on holiday, the guy is absolutely irresistible, and she needs to unplug from her life. With her dad and brother gone, Tate is left to deal with the family restaurant, which is fast going down the drain. Her employees are acting out, her boyfriend has bailed out, and her very own private stalker is emailing her to death with lovely threats of doom, fire, and dismemberment. So yeah, maybe a little holiday fling is in order. Strictly sex though, and no follow-up whatsoever once home.

She hadn't counted on her take-charge holiday fling having an opinion of his own and stubbornly sticking around, before and after the sex, making himself at home in her life. There is definitely more to James than meets her prejudiced eye, and even if she's not ready to look deeper, James isn't prepared to permit her not to.

TO THE MAX
Author: Elle Aycart
Series: Bowen #3
~ SYNOPSIS ~

Forensic accountant Annie Griffin has always suspected she's a bit jinxed, so when she finds herself 35, single, temporarily homeless, and pregnant by a gigolo, her fears are confirmed.

Adrenaline junkie and professional stuntman Max Bowen needs a house-sitter to watch after his pets while he's out of town. Annie needs a place to stay. Standard quid pro quo. No biggie. She can handle that, whatever hellhounds he owns--until Max, the most sought-after bachelor in the county, comes back ahead of schedule and she ends up being roommates with a 27-year old sex god who turns out to be so much more than what she expected.

Max might have had the attention span of a humming bird on crack when it comes to women, but that was before Annie. Her quirkiness and sweet contradictions soon captivate him, not that she's inclined to give him the time of the day. With his reputation preceding him, he knows the odds are stacked against him, but he will do his best to prove her that he's what she needs, stuck-up socialite grandmothers, doomsday preppers, groupies, pregnancy hormones, and repentant biological dads be damned.

~ BONUS SCENE of To The Max! ~
This scene is NOT in the book!

Best
way to spend Valentine's? Seven and a half months pregnant, on a Florida beach,
looking like a whale among sirens, with your feet so swollen they seemed
floating boats, and watching your sex God of a boyfriend being ogled and
salivated upon by ten-years-younger-than-you, skinny women.
Yep,
best way ever. Hands down.
Max
had had to travel to Florida
for work, and had insisted on Annie accompanying him. "Insisted" was
too mild a word. He'd totally taken over and made all the arrangements. She'd
been presented with a plane ticket and a "we're leaving tomorrow, pack
your swimsuit."
Her
man was bossy.
She
would have wanted to object, but Boston
in February was no match for Florida.
The nice weather, the beach. Max kitesurfing, doing one of his stunts while being
filmed. Yummy.
Sadly,
she wasn't the only one that thought so. Apparently the whole of Florida's female
population agreed with her.
When
the shooting was about done, Annie stood up from the sun lounger and tried
approaching. Several gorgeous groupies, fluffing out their hair, with bikinis
that left little to imagination, giggling and swaying their hips like there was
no tomorrow, rushed ahead, leaving her in the dust.
Well,
what did she expect? Max was gorgeous with that sexy short Mohawk of his all mussed
and his trimmed beard. Tanned. All wet from the sea, his muscles bulging and
glistening, his dark blond hair bleached by the sun. And that permanent roguish
smirk on his face, like he was flirting with life. She'd bet any-frigging-thing
all the women on the beach had their girlie parts tingling, just from looking
at him.
After
wrapping things up, Max turned around and moved toward Annie, smiling. The
women in front of her were already breathless, waving at him. He passed the
groupies without a second look and went straight to her, taking her in his arms
and kissing the living wits out of her.
"One
zero for the whale," she whispered when he let her up for breath.
"What?"
he asked, totally oblivious to the way the groupies glared and pouted.
"You
missed a turn. Your fans there thought you were walking to them."
He
snorted. "Don't give a fuck what they thought. I want you. Only you. Haven't
you realized it yet?"
Yes,
she had. The first day of the shooting, Annie would had preferred to stay
behind, intimidated as she was with all the gorgeousness around, but he hadn't
allowed it; he'd kept her by his side, his arm wrapped around her shoulders.
Kissing her and being sweet in front of God and everyone.
Lots
of jaws had dropped.
"You
done?" she whispered to him.
Max
nodded. "I'm all yours now."
All
hers. She loved the sound of that.
"So
now what?"
"Now
we get ready to celebrate Valentine's," he stated.
"Are
we celebrating it at the hotel?"
"Nope."
"Where
then?"
"You'll
see."
Damn,
he'd been so close-lipped about the whole thing. Their kick-ass, top-of-the-line
hotel had been fully paid for until the next morning. And by the looks of it,
they were pulling out all the stops preparing for the event.
"I
need to know what to dress for," she insisted. "Beach picnic? Amusement
park? Fancy restaurant? Naked date in the Jacuzzi?" It could be anything,
considering who her Valentine was.
He
brushed his lips with hers. "Dress how you want, Ace. You'll be stunning
anyway and everybody will think I'm the luckiest bastard alive for being
allowed to walk by your side. I'm holding you to the naked part for later,
though," he added with a wink. "Now let's get going. We're expected
soon."
Annie
was relieved when she noticed Max had on jeans and a T-shirt. If he would had
broken out the tuxedo, she would have been in trouble, seeing as the only
outfits she'd packed were maternity swimsuits and flowy summer dresses.
Once
ready, he clasped her hand in his and walked her to the car. At her inquiring
look, he just said, "Trust me. It'll be memorable."
She
had no doubt about it. So far, everything with Max had been.
They
drove for over an hour. When he parked the car, she looked at her surroundings
and broke into laughter. "The Eternal Sun resort?"
He
nodded. "I promised you memorable, love. This is the place to have it, surrounded
by couples averaging fifty years of marriage."
She'd
heard so much about this place she was giddy with excitement. And a bit
terrified, because there was a crowd at the entrance, already waving at them.
She
turned to him. "Are they waiting for us?"
He
waved back. "Yep. They are all very excited to meet you. We have a busy
schedule, I hear. Bingo. Then romantic dinner. Then dancing under the stars and
poker for the two-left-feet ones."
They
had barely made it out of the car when those senior ladies were hugging and smooching
them. Congratulating them on the baby and treating her as if they'd known her
for freaking ever.
Bingo
was a blast, not to mention the outrageous way those seniors tried to cheat. Dinner
too. The common area had been transformed into a very romantic outdoors
restaurant, with candles and roses and tables for two, but those seniors didn't
believe in privacy, and before they made it to the second course, most tables
had been pushed together, and Annie and Max were eating with a loud bunch who,
in spite of their nosiness, were adorable.
Annie'd
heard the Bowen brothers were very well liked at the Eternal Sun, but she had
no clue how much.
Everybody
there knew him and treated him like he was part of the family. And Max was so
at ease with them too.
By
desert Annie's side hurt from laughing so hard. Apparently fifty years of
marriage gave for a lot of Valentine's anecdotes, all of them hilarious.
"I've
had all sorts of Valentine's dates, from the totally awesome to the totally
horrendous," Annie whispered into Max's crook after dinner, as they danced.
"Nothing compared to this. This is off the charts."
"Off-the-charts
horrendous or off-the-charts awesome?" he asked, spinning her around to
the slow music.
She
laughed. "Awesome, of course."
"I'm
glad you're pleased."
Pleased?
They were in the Eternal Sun resort on the dance floor, surrounded by couples
who had been together for more than half a century, yet they were still holding
hands. Cooing at each other. Laughing at each others' jokes.
"They loved you," Max
continued. "I got the third degree for not bringing you here until
now."
"You got the third degree?
Because I did too."
A frown marred his beautiful face.
"What do you mean?"
"I was asked what were my
intentions toward you." Several times, actually, during bingo and dinner. "Everybody
loves you here." They'd been singing Max's praises all night long. And
warning her about hurting him.
Max laughed. "And what are your
intentions?"
"Well, I told them I plan to use
you as a sex toy and then dump you to the curb," she joked.
His amused snort was loud and clear.
"You can use me as a sex toy all you want, no objections whatsoever. You
know my cock will always be hard for you, but you won't dump me to the curb, I
won't let you."
The intensity in his words and his
erection pressing against her abraded her senses. Man, even in the middle of a
senior community he could turn her on, just by whispering into her ear.
They
danced until the wee hours and then, as promised, she ended up naked in the Jacuzzi.
Best
way to spend Valentine's Day? Or any other day of her life for that matter?
With Max. Hands down.

Stealing His Heart by Ella Jade

Genre: Erotic Contemporary Romance

Will the bad-boy pitcher strike out when it comes to love?

Shy music teacher Sophia Ballis has sworn off men. After a bad experience with a college jock she decided it was better to be alone than to get burned again. She focused on her education and now her new job at a local private school.

Professional baseball pitcher Paxton Hughes is a player both on and off the field. He's signed to the Kingston Crushers to bring home the coveted championship title. Nothing can get in his way. Serious relationships don't mix with a life on the road and he never loses focus on the game. One-night stands are his specialty for a reason.

While out jogging one spring morning, the two collide, setting their course in motion. Pax is immediately drawn to the unassuming beauty. Sophia is aware of his reputation and decides one night of meaningless sex with the attractive Texas charmer is just what she needs to get over her self-imposed dry spell. Pax has more than a one-night stand on his mind, but will his bad-boy persona and demanding schedule ruin any chances of a happily ever after?

Content Warning: contains explicit sex and adult content

“Can I walk you to your car?” Pax asked.

“Thank you.” Sophia got up from the table and took his hand. “I’m parked right out front.”

He led her across the dance floor, waving to the few people who were left, and then out to the parking lot.

“It’s that one.” She pointed to her beat-up car, the one she’d bought her freshman year of college. It was used then but it still managed to get her where she needed to go. “Probably not as nice as what you drive.”

He leaned her against the car and wrapped his arms around her waist. Her heart pounded hard against her chest, strumming loud between her ears. She could smell the beer that lingered on his breath. His hazel eyes narrowed as he swiped the tip of his tongue along his top lip before tilting his head.

“I have a feeling I’m going be seeing you in my dreams tonight.”He sighed as he brought his mouth to hers. “Give me something to remember these next few days.”

She nodded as she placed her hands on his broad shoulders and guided him to her, closing any space between them. When his warm lips touched hers, she thought she would explode. A burn coursed through her and settled between her legs. The mild tingling she’d experienced when they danced was nothing compared to the intensity she felt now.

As he deepened the kiss, his tongue massaged hers. Increasing his hold on her hips, he pinned her between the car and his massive thighs. She tightened her grip on him when his erection grazed her center. Every nerve ending in her begged to be satiated. The ache inside her stomach moved lower until the dampness invaded her panties. Her nipples poked against the thin material of her silk bra.

When she moaned into his mouth, he placed one last kiss on her lips before pulling away. He looked at her for a moment, pressing his forehead to hers as he stuttered a few words.

“That was…well, I’ve never…” He ran his fingers through his hair. “You have me tongue-tied, sugar. That doesn’t happen often.”

Now she wanted to know what else he could do with that tongue.

“You best get in that car and drive away before I…”

She’d never wanted to have a one-night stand more than she did at that very moment. Maggie had said if there was ever a guy to have one with, Pax would be the one. He was a no-strings-attached player. Why hadn’t he asked her to go home with him?

“Be safe driving home.” He reached for the handle and opened her door. “You have some sweet dreams. I know I sure will.”

Sleep? That was the last thing on her mind.

Passing the Torch by L.L. Sanders

Deep in the Arizona desert live a girl and her dad, burying secrets--and bodies.

Mesa Kingston's first memory of burying a corpse was at eight years old. Back then it had been the carcass of a large lizard her dad found that they buried in the backyard of their isolated cottage. At age fourteen, the body of a young lady accompanied the reptile's remains, and ever since, an accumulation of female bodies began to grow. Now, the only way Mesa can stop the haunting screams of the dead is by drowning them out with flames. Or is there more to the blaze than even she can perceive?

Good girls do anything for their fathers, including rob, cheat, and kill, and I always considered myself a good girl. The time I first came to that conclusion will stay with me forever. Years later, here I am, still fulfilling my daughterly duty.

After wiping the sweat from my palm onto my jeans, I press the bulbous tip of the match against the strike strip on the side of the small carton. My hands shake worse than Grandma's had when trying to slice her ninety-first birthday cake just a few hours ago, but I manage to run the match across it anyway. The flame comes alive at my fingertips, dancing merrily at the prospect of latching on to something and disintegrating it into smoldering embers. Although the light breeze causes the flame to flicker at the end of the matchstick, I'm aware of the control I have over it. I watch the glow change shape through a veil of tears and with that the decision was absolute.

The flame will get to perform its destructive duty.

I flick the match toward the pile of wooden planks that used to be the porch. Instantly the fire catches the fumes of the pooled liquid and expands so quickly a wall of gasoline-scented hot air rushes me before the blaze travels deeper into the house. I back away to a safe distance as the straw-like grass crunches beneath my feet. Nearing the homemade fence, which is nothing more than a double row of chicken wire, I hear the screams from the distance, cries of agony that meld with my memory like two spreading pools of melted wax. I can't stop the waterworks. I don't even make an attempt.

The L.L. stands for Leslie Lee. I write erotic romance and post-apocalyptic/dystopian fiction under Leslie Lee Sanders.

But horror and thriller fiction is what I grew up on, what inspires me, and what began my pursuit to authorship. I’ve written many short scary stories since the 6th grade. Now they’re much more mature in general, thanks to the wide range of emotion and experience I’ve encountered over the years.

I’m a huge fan of horror and psychological thrillers in every fashion, including movies, books, art, campfire tales, etc. Some of my favorite stories are those that twist at the end or are ambiguous with deep societal or morality themes. This includes dystopias like Hugh Howey’s Wool, psychological thrillers like Shutter Island, and popular and classic horror/romances like V.C. Andrews’s Flowers in the Attic, my favorite.

All my ideas start with a twist, which is exactly how most of my stories end.

The Dom Delivers

Ayden threw his head back and laughed. “God, I love how honest you are about what you think and feel.”

The deep melodious sound of his amusement tightened things in Jenna’s core. She squeezed her thighs together and struggled not to squirm.

Kassie cleared her throat. “What can I get you two this morning?”

Ayden’s attention never left Jenna’s face and she chalked another brownie point in his favor. He raised an eyebrow in question. “I will leave the decision in the pretty lady’s hands.”

Jenna’s stomach growled. Her nerves had evaporated with Ayden’s appearance and her mouth watered at the thought of hot pancakes smothered in maple syrup with bacon. She giggled and placed two orders for exactly that, except she added a side of hash browns for Ayden.

When Kassie left to get their two glasses of orange juice, Jenna took in the smirk hovering around Ayden’s lips. “Okay, spill. What did I do now, to amuse you?”

His eyes flared with blistering heat for a second, and Jenna’s body trembled like he had a direct link to her erogenous zones. She pictured him tying her to the brass headboard of her bed, and watching her writhe under his talented hands with the same smirk gracing his handsome features. Where the heck had that thought come from?

Ayden’s intense gaze settled into a simmer, and he sighed. “Little one, I’m not sure amuse is the correct term. Intrigue, inspire, captivate, enchant…arouse. All of those things apply, but if I’m amused, it is with myself and how I feel like a hormone laden teenager hanging on your every word.”

Jenna’s face burned at the bald statement delivered in the sexy rasp of his deep voice. Her head spun, and she picked up a menu to fan away the flames. “Holy crap, Ayden. Are you for real? You don’t know me. How can you be so…”

He chuckled. “Sure? Let me let you in on a secret, little one. We have been getting to know each other over the past nine months. Now, I’ll tell you what I’ve managed to figure out. Would you like that?”

Twisted by Desire by Desiree A. Cox

Genre: Erotic Romance

Nikki Carmichael is confused. Her head’s telling her one thing while her heart is sending another message.

She believed her first husband, Sky, was her Prince Charming. They got married expecting to live their happily ever after, but the happiness dwindled right along with their checking account. Their divorce legally ended the marriage, but not the love and uncontrollable desire between them.

Then she meets Jeff. He's hotter than an August day in Florida, and can offer her everything she’s always thought she wanted.

Jeff is committed to his life as a bachelor, but his high-powered nature has finally brought him to a crossroads. He's face-to-face with a quandary; his decisions will affect his professional and personal life forever.

Nikki’s tenacious efforts to live a dream life, while still keeping her heart shielded, are coupled with wrestling an ongoing dilemma – her heart still belongs to Sky.

But Nikki isn't the only one who’s twisted by desire.

By Monday afternoon, after an entire weekend of mulling over intriguing thoughts of Jeff, happy hour on Friday, and the card, I was wrestling with the idea of biting the bullet and calling him. The butterflies in my stomach had me so amped up. I was a bundle of nerves, and I barely got any work done all day. I sat holding his business card in one hand and my cellphone in the other, staring at his name and the numbers, drawn into the essence of the mysterious card owner.

“Just call him already,” Georgia’s voice called over my shoulder.

“What?”

“You’ve been pulling that card out of your purse and putting it back for hours. Just call him.”

“I need to talk to you.”

“C’mon, let’s take a quick walk.”

I dropped my phone into my purse and closed the bottom drawer, pushed my chair back from the desk and stood, then rounded my desk. We walked side by side down the hallway in silence until we reached the empty break area.

“So what’s up?” Georgia said.

“I just wanted to bounce something off of you; tell me what you think.” I looked down at my hand, still holding the card tight. “After you left Friday night, Connor, the shorter of those two guys from the restaurant came over with Jeff, and he introduced himself to me.” I raised my eyes back to meet hers.

“That’s kind of forward, but whatever; it’s all good, right?”

“Yeah, that part was fine. Jeff, the taller, gorgeous one, walked over, but he didn’t introduce himself. I introduced myself to him.” With my eyebrows furrowed and shoulders hunched, I continued, “I practically threw myself at him.” My head turned toward the raised hand holding the card. “And Jeff didn’t give me this card. Connor gave it to me just before I left.”

“Introducing yourself isn’t a crime, Nikki; you’ll be okay. That’s kind of weird with the card, though. Maybe he’s shy. Does it say what he does?”

“No, it only has the company logo, his name, and phone number. It’s weird. He’s weird, and his card is weird. That’s what’s been eating at me all weekend and today. Is he even interested? Why is Connor handing out his business cards for him? What if I call and he doesn’t even remember me?”

We walked back to our department, Georgia wished me luck, and I smiled my thanks before lowering myself into my seat at my desk. I set the card down on the desk in front of me, and, with my two index fingers, slid it up toward my monitor, then back to the edge of the desk. Inhaling deeply, I pulled open the bottom drawer of the desk that had my purse in it, reached in like it was a grab bag, and pulled out my phone. Inhaling, I leaned my head back, and closed my eyes briefly before lifting my head, exhaling, and opening my eyes. With resolve, I began pressing the numbers as they were listed on the card.

As the phone rang, my stomach churned like a man on a motorcycle was driving figure eights and popping wheelies in there. My heart raced, and my palms were damp. My fingernails tapped with rapid speed on the desktop as I waited. I would only allow four rings before hanging up. It was answered on the third ring by a pleasant-sounding woman, “Good afternoon; Jeffrey Carrington’s office.”

“Hello, may I speak with Jeff Carrington, please,” I said.

“May I ask who’s calling, please?”

“This is Nikki Carmichael.”

“Do you have an account with us, Ms. Carmichael?”

“No ma’am, this isn’t business related.” Fuck, I’m being screened. Maybe I’m not important enough to talk to him.

“Mr. Carrington is on another call at the moment, may I transfer you to his voicemail so you can leave a message?”

“Yes, please. Thank you.” What the hell am I doing? This is crazy. I should hang up before his machine picks up …

“Hi Jeff, you may not remember me. It’s Nikki; we met briefly Friday night. Connor gave me your card. If you have time, you can call me back on my cellphone.” I left my phone number. It was on him now to either call me back or not.

I pressed end on the call, and a surge of regret washed over my body. I couldn’t help but question if I should’ve even made the call in the first place. Why was I throwing myself at this guy? I picked up the card, slid it back into the outside pocket of my purse, and zipped it in.The message was on voicemail now, and I couldn’t take it back no matter how much I regretted making it. All I could do now was hope his voicemail malfunctioned.

Easy Like Sunday Mourning by Jennie Marts

Genre: Romantic Comedy

Dating is hard…

Single mom Maggie Hayes puts up a tough front to hide her loneliness, spending her days in the courtroom as a lawyer and her evenings as a closet video gamer. Another heartache isn’t worth the risk, not after her husband left her last year for a Hooters waitress. When she decides to try dating again, a cute video game-designing nerd seems like a safe bet….Until he becomes the prime suspect in a murder.

But falling in love can be murder…

Jeremy Rogers makes a good living designing video games, but nothing prepares him for the real world adventure of being accused of poisoning his own employee. Add in falling for a sassy attorney with a competitive ex-husband, a clingy blonde coworker, and a mammoth-size dog that eats his furniture. Suddenly fighting off a screen full of zombies or preventing an alien invasion seems like child’s play.

Game over!

Maggie and Jeremy find themselves embroiled in a game of death threats, lies, and betrayal. Maggie must learn to trust again while playing the most dangerous game of all. Because defeat could mean not only losing her heart, but also her life…

Revisit the quaint Colorado town of Pleasant Valley and sit in with the Page Turners Book Club, a group of book-loving women who double as extremely amateur detectives. Join them as they set out to help their friend, while devouring good literature and some really great desserts.

Maggie knocked on Jeremy’s door, her heart in her throat. She knew it was late, and she prayed he would be glad to see her.

She had no phone to call ahead and warn him that she was coming. Her purse was at the bottom of the lake. Thank goodness she hadn’t taken her car keys out on their date.

She was in such a hurry to get to Jeremy, to do something spontaneous for once, that she just grabbed a jacket, threw it on over her nightgown, and jumped in the car. The jacket barely covered her short pajamas and left her legs bare. She had scribbled a quick note saying she went for a drive and would be back soon, and left it on her nightstand just in case anyone came looking for her.

She had no shoes, no driver’s license, no wallet. She’d watched her speed as she had driven over, more worried about a cop catching her in a short black satin nightgown with no bra than with no license.

The front door opened, and Jeremy stood there, in a pair of black boxers with a picture of Han Solo and a caption about his light saber on them. His hair was smooshed and stood up in little spikes on the side of his head. He squinted at her through his thick black glasses. He couldn’t have looked more nerdy. Or more adorable. And she knew that she loved him.

She gave him a little wave. “Hi.”

“Maggie? Is that really you?” He stood back from the door and let her in. The house was dark except for the light from the flames thrown off by the fire that glowed in the fireplace. A pillow and a throw blanket lay haphazardly on the sofa. “I fell asleep on the couch and was just having a dream about you. Am I still dreaming?”

“If you are, then I’m dreaming too. And I don’t want to wake up.”

He shook his head. “I can’t believe you’re here.”

“Is that okay? That I just showed up? I know it’s late.”

His face broke into a grin, as if he had just received his favorite gift at Christmas time. “Heck ya, it’s okay. It’s awesome.” He grabbed her and pulled her into a tight hug, lifting her off her feet and planting a kiss on her lips.

She wrapped her legs around his waist and felt his hands slide down her back and cup her bottom under the jacket.

Jeremy pulled back, a mischievous look on his face. “Are you wearing a thong?”

Maggie’s face broke into a naughty grin. “Maybe.”

“Is it my birthday?”

“It might as well be.” She nibbled at the spot she loved, right under his earlobe. “You’ll have to unwrap me to get your gift.”

He smiled at her, a grin so big it nearly split his face. “Challenge accepted.” He carried her into the living room, her legs still tight around his waist, and dumped her onto the sofa. He straddled her and grasped the belt that tied her light jacket shut. “Should I just rip the wrapper off my present to see what’s inside? Or should I take it slow and savor the process?”

Maggie looked up at him, the flames of the fire reflected in his brown eyes. She searched his face and all she saw was love and wonder and passion. She felt this was right. This moment was exactly where she was supposed to be, and she knew she loved this man. Her voice was husky and low. “We’ve got all night. I think you should savor it and take it slow. Really slow.”

Tenacious bakery shop owner Abby is following her dreams. She has everything she could ever want in life—except the fairytale ending. Then she meets Kennedy, a hunky firefighter whose killer smile and easy charm makes her heart pound. But with the kind of danger he faces on the job each day, Abby knows there’s no happily-ever-after in the cards. The harder she tries to hold onto her heart, the faster it seems to slip away, but when a series of mysterious events threaten the future of her business and her life, their happiness may be shorter-lived than she realized.

Someone is out to get her, and it’s up to Abby and Kennedy to uncover who’s behind the destruction. Can they do it before tragedy strikes?

I heard knuckles rap against the open door. My head popped up, a spoon of batter I’d been sampling pressed between my lips, caught in mid-moan, to see Dex standing there wearing an amused smirk. “Yeah, hate to interrupt…whatever the hell it is you’re doing in here, but you have a special request.”

Pulling the spoon out of my mouth, I swallowed the lump of chocolate, noting that it could use a pinch more sugar, and shook my head. “I don’t take special orders.” Yet. I was too swamped, too early in the business and trying desperately to get a handle on the responsibilities I had now, to even begin considering taking on anything more. As awesome as the opportunity would be…Shit, no, I couldn’t trap myself by biting off more than I could chew.

“Oh, you’ll want to take this one.” Dex’s blue eyes held a devilish twinkle that was only strengthened by the wicked smile spreading across his face.

“Dex…” I sighed. Holding up my hands, covered in flour and cocoa, I arched my eyebrows. “Even if I wanted to, I’m in no condition to go out there right now.”

“Fine, I’ll send him back.”

My mouth gaped open. “Dex!” That was the last thing I wanted him to do. But he was already gone. Spinning around, I searched for the towel I usually kept close to wipe my hands on. I was scrubbing the dried, caked ingredients off my fingers when I heard a throat clear.

“I was told to come on back. I hope that’s okay?”

Damn, would I ever get used to that deep, husky voice? I brought my head up and looked right at Ken’s smiling face. He looked good—too good—standing in my doorway, in my kitchen with his arms spread out to his sides, his hands gripping the doorway. He leaned against the jamb just enough to make the muscles in his arms thicken, stretching the sleeves of the navy shirt. There was a golden firefighter emblem over his left pec, giving me a little thrill. I was dating a firefighter.

“Of course, you’re always welcome back here.” Considering that he’d already seen what a mess I was, I gave up trying to clean myself, and tossed the towel aside. Picking up the spatula standing straight up in the metal bowl, I gave the batter a few more whips. “What brings you by?”

Walking deeper into the kitchen, Kennedy approached my side of the counter and leaned his hip into it. “I was craving more of those cookies.”

“It’s always about the cookies,” I said teasingly, shaking my head.

A shiver tracked through me when Ken traced a finger lightly down the back of my arm. “I have a weakness for sweets.”

I heard the double meaning in his words, and had to work to concentrate on finishing my task. These brownies weren’t going to make themselves. “It’s a good thing that you’re here then. Sweets are my specialty.”

Kennedy leaned closer, setting his mouth against my ear. “That’s why I came to the expert. What are you doing tonight?”

An Irresistible Shadow by Kirsten S. Blacketer

Genre: Historical Romance

Lady Evelyn Montgomery, only daughter of the Baron of Rayne, detests the thought of marriage. She will never allow a man to control her. Crushed by the constraints of propriety, she steals away from the safety of the keep and stumbles onto a plot designed to stir up trouble between England and Scotland. When a mysterious hooded man saves her, she fights her attraction to him as they join forces to hunt down a traitor and save her father. But can she save her heart?

Gabriel is a Shadow Guardian. Hiding beneath his black cowl and blending into the night, he is sworn to protect the Baron's daughter. The spirited Lady Evelyn is far from the delicate flower he anticipated. She makes herself crystal clear, no man will possess her. Can he prove to her that love can be more than just possession? Or will the traitor they seek tear them apart forever?

Fear infused her body, Evelyn had been captured. The fear melted into anger. She thrashed in her captor's arms, twisting and kicking. His gloved hand tightened over her mouth and the other pinned her securely against his chest.

"I mean you no harm," a velvet voice whispered in her ear. "I don't want to bind you, but I will." Evelyn's heel connected with the man's shin. He cursed. "Although you evidently mean to harm me." His voice was calm, suffused with amusement. He carried her to where their horses were tethered.

Evelyn struggled to free herself, but he was much stronger. She was close enough to the keep to call for help, if he would only remove his hand from her mouth. He was all warm muscle against her back, a living, breathing stone wall. His breath caressed the fine hairs on her neck. When he stopped moving, she wedged her mouth open enough to fit her teeth around one of his fingers and bit down. Hard.

"God's blood, woman! I'm trying to help you," he swore in his velvet whisper, then readjusted his hand over her mouth.

So much for that idea. If she had to play along with the rogue, so be it. He held no weapon to her throat. Though his hold on her was firm, he did not cause her pain. His muscles flexed as he shifted her in his grasp. She was keenly aware of every part of him that touched her. Okay, so he had a weapon against her. Though she had yet to see his face, her body betrayed her with its reaction. Evelyn inhaled in an effort to regain her composure and breathed in his scent. It was fresh, earthy, and dangerously sinful. She groaned, embarrassed by her wicked thoughts.

Her captor stilled, his breath quickening. "I will let you go," he murmured. "If you promise to behave." She nodded, relieved when he kept his word.

Evelyn broke from his embrace and spun on him. "Who are you?" she hissed. "What do you want?" She scrutinized the shadowed man before her. He wore all black: boots, leggings, tunic, and cloak. The hood covering his head was positioned low purposefully to hide his face from scrutiny.

The man proffered a sardonic bow, waving his arm with a flourish. "I am your humble servant, my lady."

The humor in his voice made her wary of his intent. "How did you know I was here?"

"I followed you," he answered.

She swallowed the lump in her throat. Following her? The words of Sir Alexander echoed in her mind. She should have taken a guard. "Why did you not make your presence known?"

"That would not have served my purpose, my lady," he replied as he leaned against a tree, melding into the shadows. Since he seemed more amused than disturbed by her questions, she asked another.

"Why did you grab me?" she demanded, licking her dry lips. Formidable and mysterious, this man of the shadows aroused her curiosity.

"Ensuring your safety. You're not as quiet as you think you are."

Evelyn bristled. She was proud, unwilling to admit he was right. "Who do you think you are?" Her voice rose in pitch and fervor. "First, you follow me, then accost me, and finally insult me. You, sir, are playing a dangerous game. I should turn you over to the night watch." She poked him in the chest. "I don't need your help. I can take care of myself." Evelyn turned looking for her horse.

"I can see that."

Her characters creep forth from the dark recesses of her mind taking their places in the castles and forests built from her words. They straighten their spine, arming themselves with blade and bow, prepared to do their part in defense of their honor and destiny. She breathes life into the women she believes our ancestors to be, showing how they lived and loved with passion and grace.
